Education is the biggest equalizer for disabled persons. NONDO’S milestones in education are:

2. Advocacy for Inclusive education:  Incluisve education is the only way to fight stigma and labeling among children with disabilities. The organization successfully advocated for the integration of students at the Garissa School for the Mentally Handicapped. to Nomadic Integrated Primary School.

3 Representation at Boards: NONDO sits in the Boards of several schools and vocational training institute. With this, the organisation is able to push the disability agenda specifically inclusive education and access to bursaries/scholarships for CWDs.

5.  Collaboration with the Academia: NONDO has an MoU with the Management University of Africa (MUA) for opportunities for disabled persons  in industrial attachment, internship and community services. The two parties also partner on research on disabilities. As a result of this, MUA played a pivotal role in crafting the content of the NONDO’s 6th National Disability Conference,2018 and drafig of the conference’s out come document dubbed ‘The Isiolo Declaration 2018”.

Governance has been the anchor thematic pillar of NONDO. The organisation advocates for the inclusion of PWDs from nomadic communities in all aspects of governance – public participation, representation in offices, electoral processes, among others. The following have been the milestones of this sphere:

1.  Establishment of the first nomadic MCAs Caucus on disability. The caucus was established primarily to mainstream disability in the Kenyan devolved system of governance. Out of this pillar, there has been success stories in Turkana, Wajir and Kajiado, counties that have enacted disability laws and are targeting to implement them.

2.  Legal litigation in two nomadic counties for not employing disabled persons  in line with the 5% constitutional threshold. The ruling raised the profile of pwds from the region and over 100s of them got employment and promotions since.

3.  Preparation of the shadow report on the status of Kenya’s compliance with UNCRPD.

4.  The organization challenged the Judiciary on the accessibility of Garissa High Court for disabled persons. The Judiciary has since acted and made court the accessible. NONDO now is a member of Court-Users-Committee of Garissa High Court.

5.  NONDO actively participated in the discussions of post 2015 global development agenda that lead to culminations of SDGs.

6.  Conducted Detailed Baseline Survey for disabled persons in Mandera County and supported the county with implementation framework.

Health has been a recurring and pervasive challenge for many disabled persons from nomadic communities. Many disabled persons require assistive devices in their activities of daily living. This challenge is more pronounced among persons with spinal injuries, persons with albinism, other forms of physical disability, among others.

NONDO has registered the following tangible milestones under this thematic area, such as:

1.  Provision of over 2000 assistive devices to disabled persons from nomadic communities.
2.  Undertook corrective surgeries for 17 children from 4 nomadic counties in the last 6 years
3.  Supported 2 counties in matters disability mainstreaming in health sector
4.  Advocated to service providers for assistive devices that can fit the harsh terrains of northern Kenya
