NONDO HOLDS A MEETING ON DISABILITY RESEARCH
Disability research has the potential to improve understandings of the most fundamental aspect of the human condition —namely, the diversity of minds and bodies. Whatever our history, geography, class, gender, ethnicity, sexuality, and/or religion have profound intimate relationship with disability. It is the very diversity of minds and bodies that we are ultimately unified.
On 17th , September 2020, NONDO held a steering committee meeting to implement NONDO-UMMA university partnership to promote interdisciplinary interdenominational response (PIIRE) plan at Boma Inn Hotel in Nairobi. Thereafter, other stakeholders joined in to deliberate on matters disability and research. Among them included : DPOs, media personality and dons from UMMA and Kenya Methodist University, whereby each one of them was given an opportunity to present the interrelation between research and disability. Some of the key quotations that emerged from the meeting are as follows:
”Research remains a key to social, economic and political pillar without which meaningful and sustainable development can be achieved in the modern world,” Associate Professor Siringi- Kenya Methodist University.
”Research is a powerful tool in shaping policies and influencing local solutions for local problems,” Mildred Omino, Founder and Advocacy and Strategic Partnership Officer at Women & Realities of Disability Society.
”Research is a road map to progress and as Disabled Persons’ Organizations (DPOs)we need data to inform our programs,”Nancy Nteere,Executive Director at Action Network for the Disabled.
‘‘Media as a change agent should be central in mainstreaming disability in Kenya:Training media personnel on disability is the way to go,”Jackline Lidubwi-Media Trainer,Disability ,Media Activist,Head of Y254TV,KBC.
”One of the ways to use religion to mainstream disability in our society is to have disability and inter-religious dialogues for social transformation,” Dr Ali Adan-UMMA University.
Those are some of the few memorable quotes from our presenters. One thing that resonated with all of them and was recommended was that there is need to improve disability data and monitor progress on disability policies and implementation.
Ultimately, this meeting was a start of a grey area of disability research .
