National Disability Conference
The National Disability Conference is one of the flagship events of the Desert Wheel Race organized by NONDO every year. The conference is about bringing together stakeholders to deliberate on matters disability and how best it can be mainstreamed in Kenya’s devolved system of governance. It started in the year 2013 with only one County (Isiolo) participating. For the first 5 editions, the theme of the conference has been about Peace, Cohesion and Integration. In 2018, the conference was about ‘Post Global Disability Summit; Devolution and the Big Four Agenda.’ It was attended by critical stakeholders including high profile government representatives, Cabinet Secretaries, Governors especially from FCDC counties, Members of parliament, development partners, and disabled persons organizations among others. The outcome of the conference was ‘Isiolo Declaration’ that contained resolutions agreed upon by the participants to mainstream disability into issues of international, national and regional priorities.
The Declaration was to influence ‘The 6th Devolution Conference 2019’organized by Council of Governors that the theme was to be about Disability. Since this did not happen, NONDO was given a platform to invite 57 PWDs from 47 counties to attend the devolution conference that happened in Kirinyaga county early this year. Persons with disabilities participated actively and captured a communique at the end of the conference. This year’s theme is to advocate for accessible tourism in Kenya which enables all people to participate and enjoy tourism experiences.
